Website publicizes cancer map, environmental data
A pair of state legislators on Wednesday showed an improved version of a website mapping cancer instances statewide as well as buildings and other facilities holding chemicals, gases or producing air emissions.
5 of nature's best cancer-preventing foods
As a veteran faculty member at the Stanford University Medical School, Dr. John Farquhar has seen thousands of patients try to beat cancer with aggressive chemotherapy treatments that "blast them with terrible side effects." But, as the founder of Stanford's Prevention Research Center, he believes he has helped other patients beat cancer before it starts using nature's medicine: vegetables and fruits.
Making non-toxic lip gloss is easy, but we need your help with the rest!
Most of the time, attempting to protect my child from chemicals that could alter her hormones, blunt her ability to learn, and make her susceptible to cancer is a big fat drag. And then, sometimes, it’s pretty fun! My daughter Hazel has kindly agreed to demonstrate just how fun and simple it is to make lip gloss at home using easy-to-find natural ingredients. Turns out you don’t need phthalates, lead, or any other toxic chemicals to produce a great tub of gloss.
Skin Cancer Body Checks
The SunAWARE acronym is unique in the skin cancer community as it includes easy to follow advice for detection – Routinely check your skin. While we emphasize the importance of routinely checking your own skin, we also use @sunaware twitter to promote using the many free skin checks offered by dermatologists. Further, if you have any of the risk factors associated with melanoma, we strongly encourage you to make an appointment with your dermatologist to have what’s called a full-body skin exam (FBSE).
The effects of bottled water on the environment
The dangers of bottled water to the environment far exceed the dangers of the plastic in the bottles. Most people understand that plastic is, in itself, a substance that should be used sparingly and recycled when possible, but the entire bottled water industry can have terrible effects on the environment, especially since most of the water you spend all that money on comes from the same places tap water does, and is treated the same way.
Does high-fructose corn syrup cause cancer?
Not since olestra and its unfortunate propensity to cause "leakage" have we seen an industrial food get smacked around like high-fructose corn syrup. Despite protests that it's no different than sugar by groups with P.R.-unfriendly names like the Corn Refiners Association, "waning" would be a polite way to describe its popularity. And with the release of a new study that shows that cancer cells find fructose tastier -- and more nutritious! -- than other sugars, might the bell be finally tolling for the sweetener called, unappealingly, HFCS?
Is the fashion industry eco-friendly? No
Fashionists may argue that I'm not aware of the eco-fashion products that have hit the market one after another recently. The famous "I am not a plastic bag", jeans made from organic cotton and clothes made from garbage bags are just a few examples, they would say. And then, of course, they would mention charity donation programs held by big brands to help the impoverished people and protect endangered animals.
